When wildfires occur, the damage can be catastrophic. But you can reduce the chance for loss “if you just do a couple of things around your house,” like removing or reducing fuel sources and using fire-resistant materials, according to Jeffrey Cavanaugh, a USAA senior underwriting portfolio manager who specializes in reducing wildfire damage.
In addition, the National Fire Protection Agency encourages property owners to work together on a neighborhood level through Firewise Communities. USAA members in seven states (Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas and Utah) can receive a discount on their homeowners insurance premium if they live in an area recognized by the Firewise Communities/USA® program.*

*USAA homeowners policyholders living in a recognized Firewise community will automatically receive the discount at their first renewal following the discount’s effective date. New USAA policies for homes in recognized communities also qualify for the discount, but homes must meet USAA’s underwriting standards before a new USAA policy can be issued. All other selection rules and acceptability criteria also apply.
