USAA MEMBER TOYAH STEPTOE joined the military at age 22 and purchased her first home in Killeen, Texas, a few years later. Since then, she’s advanced in her career, experienced several deployments and raised three daughters.

Yet Steptoe had to learn some hard lessons about managing her money and overcoming debt — lessons the single mom is passing on to her children and the young troops in her command.

From her home in Columbia, South Carolina, Steptoe shares how she achieved financial readiness and what it means to her.
